Rooted in who he is and where he’s from, Chicago’s Thirteendegrees° defines a sound all his own on his new album, GHETTO HIPSTER, out now. Alongside the album, Thirteen drops the official music video for standout “WHITE SOX CAPZ.”
More than an album title, GHETTO HIPSTER is the clearest expression yet of the movement Thirteendegrees° has been building. It brings together two sides of Chicago, and two sides of himself, that aren’t usually expected to coexist.
He explains, “This album speaks on who Thirteendegrees° is. The words ‘Ghetto’ and ‘Hipster’ are from different ends of the spectrum, but I’m putting them together. I grew up on what you could refer to as the more ‘Ghetto’ side of Chicago, but I currently spend my time in Wicker Park, which is more ‘Hipster’ with all of the cool clothing shops and restaurants. I’m trying to give you a new perspective on me, where I’m from, and what rap can be.”
Written and recorded in Chicago, GHETTO HIPSTER could only have come from Thirteen’s hometown. The album pulls from the different worlds that raised him and the ones he moves through now, blurring the lines between South Side Chicago and Wicker Park, streetwear and thrifted fashion, rap nostalgia and a sound that’s distinctly his own.
That collision comes to life in the video for “WHITE SOX CAPZ.” Shot throughout Chicago, the visual turns the city into Thirteen’s own lookbook. Over an otherworldly synth line, his melodic delivery floats across the record as he distills Chicago style into one bar, “All I wear is trench coats, Jordan 3s, White Sox caps.” The line says almost everything you need to know. The White Sox cap is bigger than baseball. Jordans are bigger than sneakers. On “WHITE SOX CAPZ,” they’re pieces of a Chicago uniform, reworked through Thirteen’s unmistakable eye.
The album arrived with the city already behind it. Last night, Thirteendegrees° took over Half Evil in Wicker Park for an intimate listening party with fans, bringing GHETTO HIPSTER directly into the neighborhood that helped inspire its name.
He first cracked open the album’s world with “JEUNE OG” and “EMOTIONLEZZ” featuring Trippie Redd. The latter earned Thirteen his biggest one-day streaming debut to date. OKAYPLAYER praised the collaboration, writing, “The track combines Thirteendegrees°’ signature melodies with Trippie’s emotional vocal delivery.” Meanwhile, The FADER has already called him “one of the brightest young stars in hip-hop today.”
Next, Thirteen brings GHETTO HIPSTER to New York with a September 9 show at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn.
With this album, Thirteendegrees° isn’t choosing between the different sides of himself. He’s making the contradiction the point. Chicago, internet nostalgia, rap, fashion, the South Side and Wicker Park all exist in the same frame.
GHETTO HIPSTER is the name for that world. Welcome to it.
