ASTN – How Soon
Rising R&B singer, songwriter and producer ASTN returns with the evocative new single “How Soon?” Stripped back and effortlessly relatable, the track finds the 24-year-old coming to grips with the aftermath of a relationship and deciding when it’s time to move on. “How Soon?” follows his recent scorcher “Be So Cruel” and the 2022 EP You’re Almost There.
“Don’t know where the hell I’m going, but it’s better than laying here lonely,” ASTN sings over a gentle guitar and finger-snapping, adding at the chorus: “I didn’t mean to move on, but how soon is too soon to get with someone?” He deftly captures the conflicted feelings that come with an unexpected crush arising at the tail-end of a breakup, while also conjuring a soulful groove that demands repeat listens.
The accompanying video alternates between black-and-white shots and color flashbacks of ASTN as he grapples with a mix of post-breakup emotions. From heartbreak to healing, the visual brings to life the complicated process of moving on.
On the inspiration for “How Soon?” ASTN shares, “I’ve always been perceptive of others’ feelings and would consider myself an empath. That made it really hard for me to make any sort of selfish decision, even if it was the right decision. Moving on from someone isn’t as easy as some people make it seem, and that’s what “How Soon” represents for me. There’s no guideline to follow. There’s no set of rules. I just finally did what was right for me.”
“How Soon?” arrives just months after ASTN released his previous track “Be So Cruel,” which capped a breakthrough 2022. Earlier that year, the multi-hyphenate released his major-label debut EP, You’re Almost There with the five tracks being sequenced in chronological order of a breakup. Now, with the irresistible “How Soon?,” ASTN is showcasing a different side of his musicality as he gears up for a new project arriving in the spring.
For ASTN, optimism and stormier emotions exist in perfect balance. The Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, and producer makes genre-blurring songs built around light, textured R&B production, and relatable, repeatable hooks. And his new five-track EP, You’re Almost There, pushes his introspective songwriting even further—tracing the contours of the growth and confidence that comes after pushing through hard times. ASTN (born Austin Sanders) has always carried music with him wherever he went, especially as his family moved across the South when he was a kid. By his sophomore year of college, he had identified his own unique palette of warm R&B and poppier trap sounds—inspired by the hip-hop his older brother played him in the car when he was a kid—and started singing and writing. His first original offering was December 2017’s Tell Your Friends, followed by the introspective IT’S NOT THAT SERIOUS last June. ASTN has continued to demonstrate his growth as a boundary-pushing producer with his “what if this song was rnb?” remixes on social media, and his November 2021 take on Billie Eilish’s “Happier Than Ever” especially resonated—exploding to 56.6 million views in two months. With his Warner Records debut, You’re Almost There, ASTN is ready to introduce his truest self to his largest audience yet. “I just want that message to ring true,” he says. “You are almost there, whether ‘there’ is a million miles down the road or a couple feet ahead of you. I’m living proof of that.
