Indigenous Canadian hip-hop duo Snotty Nose Rez Kids mark Canadian Indigenous Peoples’ Day with the release of a new video for their latest single, “Something Else,” a track which references 2020 U.S. election reporting from CNN that labeled the Indigenous voting population as ‘something else’. Indigenous people took to social media to flip the negative label on its head and spawned many memes and reclamations of the term. Inspired, Yung Trybez and Young D noted, “The community was able to look on the bright side even though news media still fail to see and recognize us as human beings. No matter what label you throw at us, we know who we are and where we come from.”
In the video Yung Trybez and Young D invited a group of Indigenous social influencers, entrepreneurs and activists to join them, including James Jones aka Notorious Cree, Grace Dove (The Revenant, Monkey Beach), Shayla Stonechild, Ashley Callingbull (Miss Universe 2015), Justin Jacob Louis (owner/founder Section 35), Kendra Jessie, Nikita Elyse, Michelle Chubb aka Indigenous Baddie, Scott Wabano, DJ Kookum (SNRK touring DJ). “Indigenous Peoples Day celebrates Indigenous excellence! So we wanted to bring together a deadly group of social influencers making noise on the scene,” noted the guys. “From actors to dancers, activists, clothing designers, models, to storytellers, we brought everyone together to showcase what they do best. Director, Sterling Larose, got the vision and delivered a fire video that jumps between the video and behind the scenes, offers up our style of humor, and highlights the best of Indigenous excellence.”
In addition, Snotty Nose Rez Kids have announced West Coast U.S tour dates, rescheduled from 2020, kicking off October 24 in Boise, Idaho and running through November 11 in Seattle [all dates below].
From various awards and multiple millions of streams to heavy international touring, Snotty Nose Rez Kids have had a vibrant career to date. 2020 brought a lot of touring plans to a screeching halt, but the duo made use of the past year to stay busy recording. On the continued development of their signature ‘Indigenous Trap’ genre, Young D says, “This one was unique for both writing and recording. We never want to make the same project twice. We’re always trying to push the boundaries for our writing and recording. We never want to stop growing as artists and individuals. New cadences, new flows, new everything! We’ve been grinding at our pen game too! Punchlines, wordplay, metaphors, story telling, the whole nine. We never stop learning and growing.”
Since taking on the music industry by storm with back-to-back albums in 2017, multiple awards and nominations for albums “The Average Savage” and “TRAPLINE,” and amassing over 2.5 million streams on hit “Boujee Natives,” SNRK have developed into a force within the Hip-Hop landscape. “Something Else” is a window into the direction of Snotty Nose Rez Kids’ music. The duo have taken more control over all aspects of their music, self-producing and recording in their own home-built studio. Though touring is still on hold, the duo will be back soon with new announcements.
