Rising Atlanta rapper Bktherula returns today with new single “Not Wock” via Warner Records. The track showcases Bk’s unparalleled energy and charismatic charm as she spits self-assured mantras over futuristic production. At just under two minutes, “Not Wock” is an addictive invitation into Bk’s world.
“Not Wock” showcases Bk’s feathery rapping style and razor-sharp one-liners. “I walk in the club and your hoe starts blushing” she quips. The track finds Bk coming into her own, more confident and increasingly brazen. She’s paving her own path and is vocal about the lessons she learned along the way: “I don’t know how I got money / I guess you could say I attract it.” Pulsating drums and otherworldly synths swirl together into a kaleidoscopic soundscape.
“Not Wock” continues Bk’s hot streak following May’s “Blue/Santanny” which received nods from Hot New Hip Hop, Uproxx, Genius, and more. Her recent singles make good on the Atlanta artist’s quick rise—Bk’s distinctive voice and singular perspective catapulted her into the spotlight in just under a year. During the pandemic, she dropped the fever dream of a video for “Summer” and played Move Forward Fest alongside Guapdad 4000, Kari Faux, and more. Bk also produced and performed for hundreds of feverish fans at her inaugural RULAFEST. She then joined Playboi Carti and Snot for the New Year’s Eve Cyberwurld show. In 2020, she released two full-length projects, including her acclaimed mixtape Nirvana, with standout track “okok/depressing,” and the shimmering Love Santana. The latter earned over a million streams and plenty of attention, including from Pitchfork, who called highlight “On Me” “the best of the bunch, with flashy production that would make Pi’erre [Bourne] proud.”
All of this careful work has resulted in a wave of support, from both open-minded listeners and critics. Bk was among Rolling Stone’s ‘Breakthrough 25’ and has received support from OkayPlayer, Uproxx, and Audiomack among others. With singles like “Not Wock” out in the world and more visionary work coming, she’s sure to have even more fans at her back soon.
